Last night, football highlights the Purdue Boilermakers defeated the Texas Longhorns, 79-77, to advance to the Elite Eight for the second time in the last three years.
“Obviously, an unbelievable college game. Texas was fantastic. I thought both teams deserved to win,” Purdue head coach Matt Painter said to open the post-game press conference. “I thought we got good effort off our bench. Did some really good things… Anytime you can get in a game like this against athletes and length and only turn the ball over four times, it's pretty impressive. I thought our whole team did a great job of executing and taking care of the basketball.”
Boilermakers senior forward Trey Kaufman-Renn was the hero of the evening, hitting a game-winning shot with less than a second to go in the contest to lift Purdue over Texas.
“I think when you give the ball to Braden (Smith), I think he can go by anybody in the country. We have plays designed for him to do that,” Kaufman-Renn told reporters. “And so, I thought he got a good shot. And, coach always says - a lot of times - it's not the first shot that goes, it's those tip-ins at the end of games. Like, he said that my four years here, so it's kind of cool to actually experience that. I just tried to get myself in position to get a rebound, or a post if his defender cut him off."
With 11.9 seconds to go in the game, Purdue senior guard Braden Smith took an inbound pass and dribbled up the court before attempting a layup with under four seconds left on the clock. Though the layup was unsuccessful, Trey Kaufman-Renn tipped the rebounded ball into the basket with 0.7 seconds left in the game to eventually give the Boilermakers a two-point victory.
“I was standing under the rim, and I just saw it. I was like, ‘Please get in there. Please get in there,’ and it did,” explained Braden Smith with a smile. “Obviously, I didn't make the shot. It came off the hand, and the only thing I have to do is get it up there. I can't get it blocked, so there's opportunities like that for them to get the tip-ins and do those things. It honestly left the hand, and I thought it was in, so I was hopping kind of excitedly. I was like, ‘Yeah, that's in.’ And then it took a weird bounce, and it was off. Then I was standing under the rim, and Trey tipped it perfectly, and I was just like, ‘Thank God. Thank God that went in.’”
This was as even a game as we have seen so far in the 2026 NCAA Tournament. Before Purdue's final play, these squads were tied at 31 rebounds apiece. That last rebound, though, ended up being the reason the Boilermakers won the game.
“I mean, you just try to get a hand on it,” Kaufman-Renn said. “It's not like it's a shot you practice every single day… I just try to get a hand on the ball and give us another chance. And, like I said, I'm glad it went in.”
Unfortunately for Texas, two of its best players suffered injuries during yesterday's game. The Longhorns' leading scorer, senior guard Tramon Mark, was dealing with an ankle injury after landing on a Purdue player's foot. At the same time, fellow senior guard Jordan Pope was playing through a broken foot. That didn't stop those two guys from scoring 41 combined points.
“I've used the word resilience to describe our guys, our group, our team. I think it's very appropriate, and tonight's game against Purdue embodies it. I mean, it was on full display,” Texas head coach Sean Miller said after the loss. “Jordan has a lower leg injury. It was his choice to play. I don't know how many guys that I've coached under these conditions on this stage would have chosen to play… He gave us everything and gave us the opportunity to win. Ditto for Tramon. He landed on a Purdue player's foot. Really just [a] tough ankle injury. He could have done the same thing… But in both of their cases, they played for the University of Texas, and that's really what makes me the most proud.”
In the Elite Eight, Purdue will face the number-one seed Arizona Wildcats for a spot in the Final Four. If the Boilermakers beat the Wildcats, it will be their second Final Four appearance in the last three years.
“It's something we talk about, like with championships, like trying to win the Big Ten. A lot of people want to just talk about it in totality. But you’ve got to get yourself in position to win a Big Ten championship. Like this year, we didn't. And now, you‘ve got to get yourself in position. You say, ‘Hey, we want to go to the Final Four.’ Well, you better win three games and put yourself in position,” Matt Painter said. “You just got to worry about that first opponent, and then you move on if you're fortunate enough to win. But now we've put ourselves in this position.”
Purdue and Arizona will go head-to-head on Saturday. Tip-off for that game is scheduled for 8:49 p.m. EDT.
